Technology and the Last Days

How might the last days of revival take place? Will technology be part of it?

As we look at the world today, it's clear that we are living in unprecedented times. The world is changing rapidly.  Many people are searching for meaning and purpose in the midst of chaos and uncertainty. As Christians, we believe that the last days of revival are coming. This is when the Holy Spirit will be poured out on all flesh and people will turn to God in large numbers. It will be a time of great hope and expectation, but what might that look like? Will technology be a part of it? And if so, what role might it play?

The Bible speaks of a time when God will pour out His Spirit on all people.  This outpouring will result in a great awakening. In Joel 2:28–29, the Lord says, "I will pour out my Spirit on all people." Your sons and daughters will prophesy; your old men will dream dreams; and your young men will see visions. "Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days."

We have seen glimpses of these outpourings in history. Some examples include the 1904–1905 Welsh Revival and the Azusa Street Revival in 1906. But what might it look like in our modern world where technology plays such a significant role in our daily lives?

In today's world, with its billions of people, this task may seem daunting. Fortunately, we are living in a time where technology can help us accelerate the gospel's spread like never before. This presents an incredible opportunity for Christians to use technology to share the message of Christ with billions of people.

One example of how technology was used for a spiritual revival was the 2023 outpouring at Asbury University in Wilmore, Kentucky. In February 2023, a group of students gathered for a prayer meeting in the student center. As they prayed, the Holy Spirit moved in a powerful way.  Soon, hundreds of students gathered every night to worship and seek God's presence.
The revival quickly spread beyond the campus as videos of the worship services were shared on social media and live-streamed online. People from all over the world were able to join in the worship and prayer. Many were impacted by the move of God.

Another example was during the COVID-19 pandemic, which brought unprecedented challenges to the global church.  This provided an opportunity to embrace technology to continue reaching people. Through live-streaming, online Bible studies and small groups, virtual prayer, and support groups, online giving, and drive-in church services, churches have continued to fulfill their mission to connect people to God and to each other.

Aside from needing technology to help the Church through COVID-19, we can now accelerate the spread of the gospel by continuing to use social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Christian podcasts,  and YouTube channels to share our testimonies and biblical teachings with others. This way, we can reach people who prefer listening to or watching content rather than reading it. We can also provide resources for those who are not able to attend a church service.

These are just a few examples of how technology was used to spread the revival. As Christians, we have been commissioned by Jesus Christ to spread the gospel throughout the world. We can reach people in different parts of the world who may not have access to a church or Christian resources. Let us embrace this opportunity and make an impact on the Kingdom of God.

Technology is indeed a powerful tool we have to maximize in order to spread the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.
